British Values

At Reepham, we use 'Picture News' as part of our weekly worship.  It uses powerful images and questions to teach British values by sparking classroom discussions about current events. This approach helps children understand respect and tolerance for different faiths and beliefs, the importance of the rule of law, and their place as global citizens. It provides a tangible way to connect abstract values to real-world news stories, fostering debate and critical thinking skills.

How Picture News promotes British values:

  • Sparks discussion on key values: Each week, a powerful image and a "Big Question" are used as a starting point for discussion in assemblies and classrooms. This encourages children to talk about the news and how it relates to the British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance.
  • Encourages respect and tolerance: By discussing diverse news stories, children are encouraged to understand and respect different faiths, beliefs, and cultures in modern Britain. This helps challenge prejudice and stereotypes.
  • Promotes the rule of law: Children learn about the importance of rules and laws by discussing current events and how they are applied in society.
  • Fosters democracy and individual liberty: The process involves encouraging children to express their own ideas and opinions in a safe and structured environment. This prepares them for life in modern Britain by promoting informed choices and the ability to participate in a democratic society.
  • Connects local to global: Picture News helps children move from being interested in their immediate world to understanding their place in the wider, global community.
  • Makes abstract concepts concrete: The use of a powerful image makes an abstract news story more realistic and engaging for children, making it easier to understand and discuss the issues at hand.
