Year 3

Welcome to Year 3!

Our class teachers are Mrs Kalchev and Miss Rawlings, and the TA's are Mrs Solari and Mrs Lawson.  The children have settled brilliantly into life in Key Stage 2 and have embraced the new challenges with enthusiasm and curiosity.

Spring Term 2026

This term, Year 3 have been incredibly busy with lots of exciting learning across the curriculum!

History – Ancient Egypt

In History, we have been exploring the fascinating world of Ancient Egypt. The children have been discovering what we can learn about this incredible civilisation from artefacts and evidence that have survived through the ages.

We enjoyed a fantastic Egyptian Day, where the children fully immersed themselves in the world of Ancient Egypt. They gave themselves Egyptian names and carefully wrote them in hieroglyphics on a cartouche. They learnt about the mysterious Egyptian gods, designed and made beautiful Egyptian jewellery, and even discovered the (rather gruesome!) process of mummification. It was a memorable day filled with creativity, curiosity and excitement.

Art – Surface, Colour and Textiles

In Art, the children have been exploring surface and colour using cloth and thread combined with paint. They were introduced to artists who blend painting and sewing in their work, including Alice Kettle and Hannah Rae, and discussed how art and craft can come together to create expressive pieces. Throughout the unit, the children learned how to use their sketchbooks to develop ideas and experiment with colour and mark-making. They explored creating painted backgrounds on fabric, carefully mixing colours to produce different hues, tints and dilutions, and then combined paint with stitch to add texture and depth to their work. The finished pieces were exceptional, and the class were extremely proud of their final artwork — as were we!

PE – Orienteering Skills

In PE, the children worked with coaches from Lincoln City F.C. to develop their orienteering skills. They learnt how to draw a route using directions, orientate a map correctly and navigate confidently around a grid. It was wonderful to see their teamwork, resilience and growing confidence as they worked together and challenged themselves.

RE – Pilgrimage and Special Journeys

In RE, the children have been learning about what pilgrimage means to individuals and communities. We have been thinking about the idea of a special journey and why certain places hold deep meaning for people.  The children have reflected thoughtfully on both religious and non-religious places of local significance and have shared some very personal and insightful ideas.

Writing – Becoming Authors

We have been particularly impressed with Year 3’s writing this term. The children have been exploring how to use a range of sentence starters to make their story writing exciting and engaging for the reader.  They are beginning to write with real confidence, creativity and flair — we really are learning how to write like authors!

NSPCC Number Day

On Friday 6th February, the children had a fantastic time combining maths with fundraising for a wonderful cause. NSPCC Number Day brings learning and fundraising together, giving children the chance to enjoy maths while helping to support vital NSPCC services. The children came to school dressed as numbers or in creative maths-themed outfits, and they looked absolutely amazing! Throughout the day, they took part in fun numerical games, classroom challenges and problem-solving activities alongside thousands of other schools across the country. It was a fun-filled day that celebrated our love of maths while supporting an important charity.

A Fond Farewell

This term has been full of wonderful learning experiences, but it has also been a time to say goodbye. After nearly 25 years at Reepham, we have said a heartfelt farewell and happy retirement to our wonderful TA, Mrs Simpson.

Her organisation, dedication and support over so many years have made a lasting difference to countless children. She will be greatly missed by staff and pupils alike.

Autumn Term 2025

Science

This term, we have been exploring the fascinating world of Rocks and Soils. The children investigated the properties of different rocks and learnt how to compare and group them. We also discovered how fossils are formed — and many children brought in fossils from home to share with the class, which made the topic even more exciting!

History

In History, we have been learning all about trains and the Industrial Revolution, focusing on how the railways transformed people’s lives. The class particularly enjoyed using drama to recreate the famous Rainhill Trials of 1829 — a competition to find the best steam engine for the new Liverpool to Manchester railway. The winning engine, George Stephenson’s Rocket, became the model for future steam locomotives.

Lincolnshire Day

A major highlight this term was celebrating Lincolnshire Day at the Showground. It was wonderful to see so many local companies showcasing their work and achievements. The children learned about the Lincolnshire flag and discovered why people from Lincolnshire are proudly called ‘Yellow Bellies’.

Throughout the day, pupils took part in a range of hands-on activities — from engineering with Siemens Energy and healthy eating with the Co-op, to flower arranging with a local florist and sports with local clubs. Everyone had a fantastic time learning new skills and celebrating everything that makes Lincolnshire special.

PE and Wellbeing

In PE, the children enjoyed learning Tag Rugby, showing great teamwork and enthusiasm.

We also supported World Mental Health Day by taking part in the ‘Young Minds’ #HelloYellow campaign. The classroom was a sea of yellow as we proudly wore something yellow to raise awareness and show support for mental health.
